Day 93

The church at Shipton-on-Cherwell from the canal.

I couldn't resist stopping to have a look at it.

Intriguing carvings around the doorway.

The interior was simple and peaceful.

Cruising through a tunnel of green.

Up close and personal with the High Bush Bridge.

Someone found a lovely spot to moor.

Our galley even came equipped with a little vase, so of course I had to fill it!

At the pub in Thrupp, there is a framed newspaper copy about the worst disaster ever on the Great Westen Railway. It happened near Shipton-on-Cherwell, on Christmas Eve, 1890ish. About 70 people died, including some who fell into the freezing canal and drown.

Did you notice an old burnt out manor house on the hill near Shipton? Local legend has it that the lord of that manor refused the survivors any shelter, and that then the manor house mysteriously burned down. It's all very spooky!!

Our guidebook mentioned the railway disaster. But I didn't know about the manor house! Fascinating.
